Lucerne, Switzerland will always be one of my favorite European cities. Its core of well-preserved medieval history exists in harmony with modern architecture, business and the arts. Its location on Lake Lucerne with snow-capped mountains surrounding the town is truly picture perfect. We were surprised to discover how many photos we took during our three days. Around every corner we discovered another idyllic photo opp. If you’re going to travel Europe, Lucerne is a must-see....

Both of the major programs require you to begin with an online application. If you clear this background check you are required to attend an in-person interview that includes fingerprinting. TSA PreCheck is the best $85 that I ever spent on travel. The five-year pass let’s you speed through security with shorter lines (most of the time) with no requirement to remove laptops, liquids, shoes, belts or light jackets....

We’re fortunate to live just a couple hours drive from the Great Smoky Mountains, site of the most-visited national park in America. Its more than 11 visitors in 2016 more than double the second most visited park – the Grand Canyon with 5.9 million visitors. The park’s higher elevations get 85 inches of rain yearly – most anywhere in the continental United States except the Pacific Northwest. The moisture, temperature and varied altitude create an amazing collection of plants and animals....

Traveling Highway 1 from Freeport (home of L.L. Bean) to Boothbay Harbor (a remote fishing village turned tourist hot spot), the Wandering Roses stopped in the town of Bath to stretch our legs and do a quick lap through the Maine Maritime Museum. Having read that this was a good way to connect with the state’s seafaring history -- including boat building, commerce and lobstering -- we budgeted 45 minutes....
